The author, a veteran criminal attorney, narrates the development of Southwestern frontier criminal justice in the United States anecdotally through the stories of individual trials, including the trials of men from Wichita Falls for lynching a pair of bank robbers and Texas trials involving cattle theft and murder. A central character involved in a number of the later trials described is Tom Ross, a cattle rustler, murderer, and prison escapee. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
